View full detailsBefore you buy a men's jacket, check five details: the fill, the hood, the collar, the fastening and the fit. This guide goes through each one, with examples from our range of puffers, parkas, zip jackets, bombers and denim jackets.
Five things to check
1. The fill and padding
Quilted puffer jackets are the most common style here and the warmest. Blauer is the label with the most jackets here, and EA7 is also in the range. For lighter weather, a single layer is enough.
2. The hood
Hooded parkas and winter jackets from Boss, Lyle & Scott and Blauer keep rain and wind off. Napapijri and Lyle & Scott also have waterproof pieces.
3. The collar
Zip jackets with a high turtleneck-style collar protect the neck and look sporty. See also Colmar and North Sails.
4. The fastening
A full zip is easiest to adjust. Satin bombers and denim jackets are lighter and better for spring and early autumn, and Superdry, Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger are also worth browsing.
5. The fit
Leave room for a knit or sweatshirt underneath, but not so much that the shoulders look oversized.
What to wear with them
A jacket works over a t-shirt or polo with jeans or trousers. For extra warmth add a gilet, and for smart occasions see our formal jackets and shoes. Our jacket guide and streetwear guide show more combinations.
Fabrics, colours and care
Polyester, polyamide and nylon are the main fabrics, alongside cotton, denim and satin. Navy and black are the most common colours, with grey, green, beige and red in smaller numbers. Most pieces are for autumn and winter, with a few for spring and summer. Follow the care label for each piece.
